Finnish Business College

Museum of typewriters and calculators at the Finnish Business College

In 1898, a group of Finnish-speaking and Finnish-minded businessmen founded Finnish Business College (FBC), the oldest Finnish speaking business college in Finland.

Finnish Business College and the Institute of Information Technology merged in 1999, to form a new, larger Finnish Business College. The college is the largest upper-secondary level business college in Finland with nearly 1500 students. The college shares premises and co-operates with Helsinki Business Polytechnic – Helia.

Our Typewriter Collection

Typewriter and Calculator Museum at the Finnish Business College

In commemoration of the 150 th anniversary of Finnish business education in 1988, the Foundation of the Finnish Business College decided to open a private museum of typewriters and calculators. The first typewriters were acquired and Mr. Gennaro di Napoli, a native Italian who has lived and worked in Finland for about forty years, donated a basic collection of typewriters to the college. He is also our expert on typewriters with his extensive knowledge acquired through his work experience.

Classfroom from 1907 at the Finnish Business College

With about 300 typewriters and about 150 calculators as well as office equipment our collection is the leading one in Finland. Nearly all of the typewriters have been found in Finland and most of the calculators and the office furniture were donated to our museum by a Finnish company. Our collection is exhibited at premises of the college. As there is a renovation taken place at the school, our exhibition will be reopened in 2006.

Our web-site is intended for a layman and does not include information of the history of the typewriter or technical description on typewriters. This information you can find in the numerous web-sites describing the typewriter as well as the variety of typewriters produced in different countries.
