Marchant Calculating Machine Co., Oakland, USA
Two brothers, Rodney and Alfred Marchant founded the company in 1910. The first calculator was an Odhner type pinwheel calculator. Marchant was the first mechanical calculator made in USA for commercial use. In 1918 Carl Frieden, chief engineer of the company, designed a new successful type of calculator. The company built both mechanical and electromechanical calculators with a reputation of reliability. In 1958 Marchant and Smith-Corona founded a joint company Smith-Corona Marchant Co. (see Smith-Corona typewriter).
