Mr. Kyota Sugimuto patented his Japanese typewriter in 1929. He adapted typewriters to kanji and choose 2400 characters. The chosen character was raised by a type-bar that could move up and down, right and left. However, until the 1980s, the great majority of documents in Japan were written by hand. Manual typewriters did exist, but were large and heavy and writing was slow. The appearance of word processors was a great development and revolutionized office.
