World is a small index typewriter. Inventor was John Becker. Compared with its contemporary typewriters World was simple and therefore much cheaper to produce. World No.1 was manufactured by World Typewriter Co and introduced in 1886. It was printing only in capital letters. World No.2 was introduced in 1890. No.2  wrote both capital and small letters. Characters were chosen by a pointer over a semi-circular index. World No.2 was manufactured by Pope Manufacturung Co. This company was the leading manufacturer of bicycles and introduced its first bicycle in 1876. The company declared bankruptcy in 1907. World is an important collector’s item.
