It was founded  in 1898. The company name today, KUKA, is an acronym for Keller & Knappich and its trademark. It started producing welding equipment for the metal industry. After World War II the company  expanded into other fields. Portable typewriters were only a small part of the business. Today the company is one of the market leaders in industrial robots.
